San Diego Maternity Photographer / Expecting mamas - you need to meet Liza!

I have recently joined the club of expecting mamas! I am currently 22 weeks pregnant with our second child - a baby boy!

Since learning that I was pregnant, I knew that joining a prenatal yoga class was something I absolutely needed to do. I lead a very busy lifestyle - as do all of you, I am sure. I was convinced that carving out that one hr a week to practice yoga, breath and relax would have an astounding benefit! That is how I met Liza.

My first prenatal yoga class with Liza at Babies in Bloom left a lasting impression! I could not wait to return. Just last week, I interviewed Liza in the hopes of getting information out to other expecting mamas! Not only is Liza a North County prenatal yoga instructor but also a Lactation Education Counselor. and so much more! Read on.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I’m Liza Janda and I have a passion for pregnancy, labor, and birth, and breastfeeding. I’ve been teaching yoga and practicing Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga and Prenatal Yoga for over 16 years. My passion for prenatal yoga was inspired by my own pregnancies and natural birth experiences and also my passion for teaching natural childbirth. Over the years, my fervent belief in the power of women and birth has grown and grown.

I began by teaching fitness for 24 years, and worked at some of the world’s leading spas: The Golden Door, Cal-a-Vie, and Rancho La Puerta. When I was pregnant the first time, I was absolutely terrified. I didn’t really know I was terrified because I was in denial! But I was blessed to learn about The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth. My teacher, Marcia Manley, and the Bradley Method transformed my whole experience. I found such a profound strength and power through my birth experiences of my daughter and then my son. I feel that God led me right to where I am today.

I’ve been teaching The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth for 23 years! I have a passion for helping mothers have positive birth experiences.

I also recently started teaching at Scripps and became a certified Lactation Education Counselor through UCSD. I love working with new moms and preparing couples for life with a newborn – although nothing really prepares you for the reality!

· Aligns both uterus and baby to help with labor and birth

· Helps you sleep better during pregnancy

· Reduces anxiety

· Increases your endurance so you are physically and mentally ready for childbirth

· Relieves back pain, the most common complaint during pregnancy

· Strengthens and stretches all the muscles in the pregnant woman’s body

· Helps pregnant mothers be more comfortable

· Makes mothers-to-be feel good in their bodies

· Increases length of breaths stimulating the production of endorphins

· Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system

· Studies have shown practicing prenatal yoga in the last 10-12 weeks of pregnancy shortens labor and reduces the perception of labor pain.

What three things could an expectant mom begin doing right now to help her relax and get ready for birth?

Take a good childbirth class.

She should take a Bradley Method Childbirth Class

If she’s taking a Hypnobirthing class, she should also take the hospital class to learn about medical interventions during childbirth.

She should hire a doula

She should practice mindfulness and relaxation every day

She should read Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth

Sorry there are more than 3!
